Below are typical sizes utilized from the 1880s - 1940s. All sizes are nominal and are within 3% of ANSI Standards..
All standard patterns are assembled with a historic grout spacing of 3/32" or a tight joint spacing of 1/16".
HEXAGONS 
Size is measured from flat side to flat side
Most common hexagon size is the 1" or 1-1/4" 
SQUARES
Most common square historic size is the 3/4" square.
